Platooning is the event of two or more road vehicles driving very close together in the same lane in order to enjoy a draft benefit that results in fuel savings.
Platooning is interesting commercially since trucking companies can benefit from the savings over the long run. The majority of platoon research has been conducted on optimizing total savings for best environmental impact.
Is platooning safe? Although the safety of platooning may be unintuitive, platooning will take away some of the decisions we have to make on the road. The idea is that the less decisions we have to make, the less accidents will occur. This is a great theory that researchers are testing. Safer roads with better fuel economy would certainly be a dream come true.
